Mesker Park Zoo & Botanic Garden, spread over an area of over 70 acres, is the largest and oldest zoo in Indiana. It was founded by Gilmour Haynie in 1928.The zoo is home to more than 650 animals from 200 species. In the zoo, one can see hippopotamus, monkeys, lions, tigers, giraffes, rhino, and kangaroos roaming freely amid exotic plants, wildflowers and trees, in its simulated natural habitats.The Prairie Dog Exhibit, where children can tunnel with the animals, is popular among visitors. Boating facilities are available in the lake.Other major attractions in the 50-acre park include the Children's Enchanted Forest, the Discovery Center - which focuses on the world's vanishing rainforests and animals – and a narrated tram ride through the zoo park.The Mesker Park Zoo is located at north-west Evansville, off St. Joe at 2421 Bement Avenue.
